What's your preferred base/figure combo for playing with?

There's a lot to choose from, my preference varies all the time. Currently I'm enjoying playing with subbuteo LW bases with 2K4 figures. I do also like playing with subbuteo HW bases and santiago figures. What's everyone elses preferences?

Hi Adam
I do like the 2K4 figures, so have some of the little fellas in peg disks fitted into TopSpin bases.
But obviously play with some TopSpin HW figures too.
Difficult to strike a balance between aesthetics and playability sometimes.
Good to see somebody using this forum, by the way. Wouldn't surprise me if forumotion deleted it due to the lack of activity. It's general practise.

finally remembered what my password is Steve! Rolling Eyes

Compared to a subbuteo branded HW or LW, how do the Topspin bases compare?

Don't think anything compares to the original HW for consistent curling. But the small blob of blu-tax idea is a popular one for bridging the playing gap.
I believe TopSpin do a 'power' version of their base, which may be a little closer to the 'real' thing.

hI Guys I have spoken to Ad about these combinations however I found the Topspin LWs weak when it came to shooting/play ability even with a blob of blu-tak. Subby LWS still rule for me when it comes to shooting in the box oh er!!!!

Heavyweights are great though vary from team to team imo , although for me that's part of the fun .Mark one Zeugos are very good .Santiagos I love with a tad extra weight .Lightweights are brilliant for curling , some of them do make a "tinny" sort of sound on contact with the ball though .Flats though are the swerving / curling masters , there's nothing to touch them imo .Those are the 4 types I use , never felt the need to try others .

I use all manner tbh. I stick the 2k4 fig into Santiagos and have some SF HW on peg I like and use these on SF bases and the Santiagos too.

I agree with Jim that HWs vary from team to team. I believe that white outer teams play better than all the others...maybe it's just me???

Yes they do. I vaguely recollect hearing Jim speak about this ... Jim?
Isn't the composition of a white base different to a coloured base?

They look a bit heavy don't they. Often wonder how many sets were produced with them as I've never seen any. There must be some of these old buttons still around.

My mum used to have a big biscuit tin full of buttons. A real treasure trove. I use to spend ages pawing through them when I was small. I recall some buttons like these with a split in.

Impossible to verify, of course, but in a recent chat with my brother - he's 14 years older than me, born 1954 - he said that he inherited our cousins old set. He thought I'd had them passed down to me (no such luck).

It's just possible that once upon a time I had these early bases in my grasp.

They talk about the Munich set being the Holy Grail, but the true one IMO is a set on button bases.
